How to write a problem statement - chapter 1

I have taken all the compulsory class in my University, but still hungry to learn on how to write.
Now I learn from youtube teacher. For student like me, whatever I learn in university is never enough. Lately I am listening to Dr White Guy, I believe he is qualified to teach the subject as he is a Dr itself. He had gone through what I am about to go through. How to write a problem statement (you must have read the literatures, 400 recommended or 100 also can)

Problem statement – one of the easiest to write – (Dr. Guy White said)

Read about how to structure chapter 1

Like funnel, background section, start very general situation, then focus on small section).

Background, problem statement and purpose statement

Part 1- What is the problem, what do we know about it,

What are the researcher want us to know (this is taken from previous literatures gaps) - must be super narrow.

 You must first do chapter 2, who is saying what? (do a matrix (table) on this)

para 1. what we know - the problem is , what do we know about the problem i.e. numerous researcher have studied (put citation here at least 3 literature)

para 2. what we don’t know - what don’t we know about the problem i.e. despite all our knowledge around ----research had found out there much we don’t know –list the author

para 3. what they want us to know - what do researchers want us to find out (what we need to study) -i.e.contemporary researcher want us to research on these 3 key areas of this problem, what author write (group them together)

then only our reader understand what we want to study.

Dimension

After my first proposal defense only I know that I had to use back the dimension that has been created by earlier researcher. I am writing about consumer acceptance, therefore I need to begin reading on the theory and its dimension. Little that I know that there is more to learn.

I am thinking that after proposal defense, that it. Only thing left is to sent the questionnaire and do analysis about the finding. Alas, its not the case....

I need to present it again with the detail on how to go about it. Together with the dimension, questionnaire, CFA and EFA. I put here the literature I need to read for my future reference.

Cara belajar

First year in phd journey. I learn to read the literature. I collected many journal and articles related to my study. I collected anything about Islamic finance.

I read and read but still I cannot comprehend to it. I really do not understand it. What do I really want to find in this all written articles? It takes me one year to realise that I need to summarise all those finding and conclusion made by previous author.

Second year in my study, I already know what are the literature gaps. I re-read the whole article again and find out what are the variables involved in their writing. Still there is a huge amount of reading to do.

Now in the third year of study, I finalised my variables. I know what variables I needed. Then only I go to youtube to learn how people do literature review. I did that after my proposal defense. (Can you imagine how chaotic my proposal defense).

I choose and select related article. The one that within my scope only. I compress it from 800 journal to become 90 only. I know that I need to compress it again to become only less than 50. You see the process that we all have to go through if we do not have a close mentor in our study, All in all, nobody can teach you how to do it. Your supervisor will let you drown. You got to swim through it.

Now that I know what to do. I still learn how to make it perfect according to academic standard. I learn from reading "how to" instruction manual. The material come from you tube, internet search and books. Once you reach your third year, This is necessary to fine tune your attitude. You need to adhere to industry practise, to become one of them. In this case I mean "academic researcher"

Teknik menulis literatur

Ramai dari kita yang melakukan kesalahan ini, kita mula menulis tanpa mengumpulkan journal yang perlu. 

Kita tulis dan tulis sehingga banyak mukasurat akan tetapi isinya sama sahaja, cuma ayatnya sahaja yang berlainan.

Cara yang terbaik untuk menulis literatur ialah mencari bahan apa yang berkaitan untuk di tulis. Kita mesti meyusunnya megikut tahun. 

Setelah kita susun mengikut tahun. Kita pilih pula mengikut variables yang kita mahu. Kemudian barulah kita mula menulis.

Kadang-kadang kita nak tanya soalan tentant pembelajaran kita, akan tetapi supervisor pun sibuk aja memanjang, ataupun dalam kes saya ni, dah dua SV berhenti dari university saya. Kalau dah tak faham sangat bahasa yang di tulis, boleh lah menggunakan Microsoft word punya translation features.

Persediaan untuk proposal defense

Selepas beberapa hari memikirkan cara terbaik untuk membuat presentation bagi proposal defense, barulah teringat yang sebenarnya saya memerlukan skrip untuk digunakan sebagai bahan untuk reherseal.

Senarai yang perlu untuk hari presentation.

1. Sediakan power point slides, data di ambil dari theis yang dihantar kepada pemeriksa. Pastikan data anda sama dengan salinan yang di hantar kepada pemeriksa. Jangan ikut salinan lain ye, walaupun biasanya student akan buat beberapa perubahan selepas mereka dah hantar thesis mereka untuk di periksa.

2. Baca power point slides. Cuba buat ayat yang berkaitan dengan power point slides yang dah kita sediakan.

3. Kalau rasa boleh ingat apa yang kita nak cakap nanti, tulis lah teks ucapan exactly how you want it to be presented. Baca dan hafal sebaik mungkin.

4. Buat rakaman ayat-ayat yang anda dah tulis, kemudian dengarkan semula.

5. Last sekali buat reherseal dekat depan kawan-kawan dan lecturer. Dengar komen dari mereka.

Rasanya itu sahaja lah yang saya nka kongsi di sini. Harap ianya berguna untuk anda.

Cari satu journal yang memang kita suka refer, ataupun yang terhampir sekali dengan research title kita. Kemudian tengok, journal tu publish kat mana? kemudian login to that particular journal dan cari special edition yang berkaitan dengan research kita, kalau tak der juga, kita tengoklah penulis mana yang kerap publish kat situ. Cara mudah nak buat benda ni ialah, tengok je kalau supervisor kita ada publish apa-apa yang berkaitan dengan research kita. Kalau nak senang lagi, tanyalah SV kita. Kalau dia jawab tu baguslahlah, biasanya dia akan suruh cari sendiri...hahahaha, dah sampai tahap phD pun nak tanya benda basic lagi , apa cerita ni?

Prepare a matrix of Variables/Construct

Hari ni nak menulis tentang kepentingan membuat matrix ataupun table.

Sebagai pelajar, kita kena selalu membaca kan, kadang-kadang kita akan lupa apa yang kita dah baca atau pun belum. Ianya akan menjadi kusut kalau kita tikdak membuat summary ataupun ringkasan apa yang dah di baca.

Kalau baca satu jurnal je tentu takder masalah. Boleh la hafal mana yang patut. Tapi kalau setiap hari baca satu jurnal (ini kira jumlah minimum tau, selalunya kena baca lebih dari satu dalam sehari). Mau jadi gila nak ingat semua benda. Orang Kedah cakap penyakit "seben" bercakap sorang-sorang.

Kadang-kadang bila aku cari satu file yang nak guna, aku terjumpa dengan file yang dah lama tak di access, aku pun selalu terlupa nak baca artikel yang dah lama aku download sebab ada juga artikel yang aku terlepas pandang. Maknanya aku tak senaraikan kat dalam folder yang perlu dibaca.

Selalunya selepas download satu-satu artikel aku akan save kat software Mendeley, dan taip masuk ke dalam excel format senarai untuk di baca, biasanya aku akan letak tarikh di download dan tarikh yang sepatutnya aku baca. Biasanya yang aku terlupa nak baca ialah E-book, jadi untuk mengelakkan aku lupa nak baca, aku masukkan juga E-book tu kat dalam senarai jurnal yang wajib aku baca, cuma aku tak letak tarikh bila sepatutnya aku baca.

Peringatan untuk diri sendiri, kalau nak save jurnal kat dalam pc atau thumbdrive, gunakan nama penulis dan tahun ia ditulis, kalau boleh guna nama last dia, kalau penulis tu orang yang namanya ada bin atau binti, save mengikut nama bapa dia, dan kalau orang putih save ikut nama family dia okeh.

Ini adalah untuk mengelakkan kita terkeliru apabila nak cari file tu, ataupun kalau penulis yang sama ada menulis beberapa artikel pada tahun yang sama, pasti kita tak dapat cari file tu.

Kadang-kadang kita perlu save file pdf di dalam betuk page by page, saya menggunakan Primo pdf, untuk printkan ia. Kita boleh pilih mukasurat yang kita perlu sahaja untuk di simpan. Dengan cara ini kita akan menjimatkan storage yang kita guna.

Bagi saya namasendiri.com memang perlu bila kita berminat untuk menjadi medium penyampai kepada sesuatu maklumat. Banyak benda yang kita boleh kongsikan untuk pengetahuan orang lain. Tak semua dari kita ada kepandaian untuk menerbitkan buku atau ada pelung untuk menulis ke majalah. Kadang-kadan tu kita dah tulis besusah- payah, tetapi di reject pula oleh editor.

Jadi, kita gunalah medium menulis blog ni untuk kita meyampaikan apa yang kita nak kongsikan.

Susunan Reference

Dari pengamatan saya, reference perlu ditulis dari yang terbaru, kemudian baru follow ke reference yang di tulis lama sikit.

Sedikit perbezaan/tips: Chapter 2 (Literature Review): Anda diminta bersabar sekejap…. untuk mengeluar pendapat sendiri, Chapter 2 ‘bukan’ Chapter anda. Maksudnya… Chapter 2 ini tempat kumpul/compile segala refs (idea org lain) yang
